RESUMO

The objectives of the present study was to investigate the effects of resistance training (RT) on serum levels of controlling blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability indices and cognitive performance in MS women (MS-W). In this randomized control trail study (IRCT registration code: IRCT20120912010824N3, 07.09.2023), twenty-five MS-W were randomly divided into sedentary (MS) and resistance exercise (12 weeks/3 times per week/ 60-80% of 1RM) (MS + RT) groups. Fifteen healthy aged-matched women participated as a control group (HCON). The serum level of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), matrix metallopeptidase-9 (MMP-9), tissue metalloproteinase inhibitors-1 (TIMP-1), tissue metalloproteinase inhibitors-2 (TIMP-2), and S100 calcium-binding protein B (S100B) were assessed. In addition, cognitive performance was assessed pre- and post- intervention with the Brief International Cognitive Assessment for MS (BICAMS). A significant reduction in MMP-2, TIMP-2 serum levels, and MMP-2/TIMP-2 ratio were observed in post-test for MS + RT group (p < 0.01) in comparison to the HCON and MS groups; however, no changes were observed in MMP-9, TIMP-1, S100B and MMP-9/TIMP-1 ratio after RT (p > 0.05). The verbal learning was improved in post-test for MS + RT group (p < 0.01), although no change were observed for visuospatial memory and information processing speed (p > 0.05). These findings suggest that resistance training can modify some indices of BBB permeability and improve verbal learning in MS-W. The findings may also be beneficial as a non-pharmacological intervention to reduce inflammation.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to assess the effect of 8 weeks of moderate-intensity aerobic training on permeability inflammatory indicators of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and specific tissue inhibitors of MMPs in female migraineurs. METHODS: Female migraineurs (n = 28, age 32 ± 6) were randomised into two groups: migraine with exercise training (EXE + Mig, n = 13) and migraine without exercise training (NON-EXE + Mig, n = 15). Matched healthy women were also recruited as a healthy control group (CON, n = 15). The EXE-Mig group performed 8 weeks of aerobic training. Pre and post intervention, serum matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-2 and 9) and specific tissue inhibitors of MMPs (TIMP-1 and 2) were measured. In addition, body composition indices and VO2max were determined. RESULTS: Exercise training reduced serum MMP-9 in female migraineurs with between-group changes and a time x group interaction (p < 0.05). In addition, exercise training reduced the serum MMP-9/TIMP-1 ratio in female migraineurs with between-group changes and time x group interaction (p < 0.05). However, no training-induced effect was observed in serum TIMP-1, TIMP-2, MMP-2 contents (p > 0.05) and MMP-2/TIMP-2 ratio (p > 0.05). Finally, exercise training reduced body fat content, WHR and BMI, and improved VO2max (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrated beneficial effects of aerobic exercise training on some circulatory inflammation factors (MMP9, MMP-9/TIMP-1) and some health indicators in female migraineurs, suggesting that such training can be employed as a non-pharmacological therapeutic method.

BACKGROUND: The capabilities of the biomotors are essential to the success of the taekwondo athlete. This study aimed to compare eight weeks of functional training and traditional resistance on the bio-motor capacities of elite female taekwondo athletes. METHODOLOGY: Seventeen elite taekwondo athletes (mean age = 21.7 years, mean height = 167.2 cm and mean weight = 60.8 kg) volunteered to participate in the study. They were randomly divided into two groups: functional training (FT) and traditional resistance training (TRT). Participants trained for 8 weeks, 3 sessions per week, for 75-90 min. Aerobic power, anaerobic power, speed, reaction time, agility, muscle power, dynamic balance, flexibility, upper and lower body muscle strength, core and upper body muscle endurance, and blood lactate level were measured before and after training programs. RESULTS: Non-significant differences were observed in all indicators between the FT and TRT groups (P > 0.05). Both groups showed significant improvement in time-related outcomes except for fatigue and flexibility (P > 0.05). There was significant progress in both groups in aerobic power, muscle power, speed, agility, reaction time, lower body strength, upper body strength, dynamic balance of the right leg, and dynamic balance of the left leg indices from pre to post-tests. The FT group displayed significant improvement in peak power (P = 0.006) and mean power (P = 0.015) from pre- to post-test. CONCLUSION: Both interventions improved most biomotor abilities in elite female taekwondo athletes. It should be noted that since muscle power is vital for taekwondo, therefore, it is recommended to include FT in the taekwondo workout program.

BACKGROUND: Oxidative stress plays a major role in the progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD)-related cognitive deficits. OBJECTIVE: This study was done to determine the protective effects of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) alone and in combination for eight continuous weeks, on oxidative status, cognitive functions, and histological changes in the hippocampus in amyloid-ß (Aß)-induced AD rats. METHODS: Ninety male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to the sham, control, Q10 (50 mg/kg of CoQ10; P.O.), HIIT (high intensity: 4 min running at 85-90% VO2max, low intensity: 3 min running at 50-60% VO2max), Q10 + HIIT, AD, AD+Q10, AD+HIIT, and AD+Q10 + HIIT groups. RESULTS: The results showed that Aß injection reduced cognitive functions in the Morris water maze (MWM) test and recognition memory in the novel object recognition test (NORT), which was accompanied by a decrease in total thiol groups, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase activities, an increase in malondialdehyde levels, and neuronal loss in the hippocampus. Interestingly, pretreatment with CoQ10, HIIT, or both, could markedly improve the oxidative status and cognitive decline in the MWM and NOR tests, and hinder neuronal loss in the hippocampus of Aß-induced AD rats. CONCLUSION: Therefore, a combination of CoQ10 and HIIT can improve Aß-related cognitive deficits, probably through an amelioration in hippocampal oxidative status and prevention of neuronal loss.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is associated with an impaired immune system that severely affects the spinal cord and brain, and which is marked by progressive inflammatory demyelination. Patients with MS may benefit from exercise training as a suggested course of treatment. The most commonly used animal models of studies on MS are experimental autoimmune/allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) models. The present review intends to concisely discuss the interventions using EAE models to understand the effectiveness of exercise as treatment for MS patients and thereby provide clear perspective for future research and MS management. For the present literature review, relevant published articles on EAE animal models that reported the impacts of exercise on MS, were extracted from various databases. Existing literature support the concept that an exercise regimen can reduce the severity of some of the clinical manifestations of EAE, including neurological signs, motor function, pain, and cognitive deficits. Further results demonstrate the mechanisms of EAE suppression with information relating to the immune system, demyelination, regeneration, and exercise in EAE. The role for neurotrophic factors has also been investigated. Analyzing the existing reports, this literature review infers that EAE is a suitable animal model that can help researchers develop further understanding and treatments for MS. Besides, findings from previous animal studies supports the contention that exercise assists in ameliorating MS progression.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a potentially disabling disease of the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system). The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of 6 weeks of aerobic training on the main proteins of myelin including myelin basic protein (MBP), myelin oligodendrocyte (MOG), myelin associated glycoprotein (MAG), and myelin proteolipid protein (PLP) at hippocampus of C57BL/6 mouse model of cuprizone-induced MS. Twenty-eight female C57BL/6 mice (23 ± 3 g) were randomly divided into four groups (n = 7 per group): control, exercise (Exe), cuprizone (CPZ), and cuprizone with exercise (CPZ + Exe). Exercise groups performed treadmill aerobic exercise training 5 days a week, 15-22 m/min, and 15-60 min, during 6 weeks. Cuprizone were fed to mice at CPZ and CPZ + Exe groups for 6 weeks. Animals were sacrificed after 6 weeks. Biochemical and molecular biology analyses were performed. Mice at CPZ group had decreased myelination of nerve cells in the hippocampus. In addition, the use of CPZ in the hippocampus caused a decrease in the MBP, MOG gene expression, as well as a decrease in the MAG and PLP gene and protein expression compared to the healthy control group. However, performing aerobic exercise with CPZ consumption increased MBP gene expression and increased MAG and PLP protein expression, as well as increased myelination of nerve cells in the hippocampus compared to the CPZ group (p < 0.05). It seems that regular aerobic exercise in the MS model controls the destruction of myelin in the nerve cells of hippocampus by upregulating MBP, MAG and PLP, which can have positive effects on cognitive and motor performance.

This study aimed to determine the magnitude of correlation between the repeated curve sprint test (RCST), the running-based anaerobic sprint test (RAST) and the Wingate anaerobic test (WAnT) in elite male futsal players to determine whether the field test can be a futsal-specific alternative assessment tool compared to the other tests. Fifteen trained futsal players (20±3 yrs) performed the RCST, RAST and WAnT in a crossover design over three weeks. Peak power (PP), average power (AP) and the fatigue index (FI) were obtained from the tests. Finger-prick blood-lactate measurements were performed before and after the tests, and heart rate loading was recorded. To assess the magnitude and direction of the relationship between variables the Pearson's correlation coefficient (r) was calculated. In respect of AP, there was a significant correlation between the RCST and both the WAnT (r=0.63, p=0.012) and the RAST (r=0.67, p=0.006). In respect of PP, the RCST only correlated with the RAST (r=0.71, p=0.003). In respect of the FI, the RCST did not correlate with either the RAST or the WAnT (p>0.05). Post-test heart rate values in the RCST correlated with those in both the WAnT (r=0.88, p=0.001) and the RAST (r=0.77, p=0.001). Also, post-test blood-lactate levels in the RCST correlated with those in both the RAST (r=0.58, p=0.025) and the WAnT (r=0.54, p=0.039). In conclusion, the RCST can be a valid and practical field test for measuring anaerobic fitness in competitive futsal players.

Objectives: Blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability is central in multiple sclerosis (MS) pathophysiology, and exercise may improve BBB integrity. The current study investigated the prophylactic and/ or therapeutic role of aerobic exercise (EX) training on BBB integrity in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). Materials and Methods: Forty female Lewis rats were randomly divided into four groups. The experimental groups included: no-EAE induction+ no-exercise (no-EAE+ no-EX), no-EAE induction+ exercise (no-EAE+EX), EAE induction+ no-exercise (EAE+ no-EX), and EAE induction+ exercise (EAE+EX). The no-EAE+EX and EAE+EX groups performed six weeks of progressive aerobic exercise training. GFAP, angiopoietin 1 (Ang-1) expression, tight-junction (TJ) proteins of claudin-5 and occludin were measured as components of BBB integrity and the rate of neuronal apoptosis was evaluated in hippocampi. Results: A significant increase in GFAP and Ang-1 expression (P<0.001) and conversely a down-regulation in TJ proteins (P<0.05) was found in the brains of the no-EAE+EX group compared with the no-EAE+ no-EX group. The expression of GFAP and Ang-1 proteins significantly increased in the hippocampi of the EAE+ no-EX group (P<0.001), whereas aerobic training (in the EAE+EX group) meaningfully reversed such increases (P<0.001). Besides, down-regulated TJ proteins and increased neuronal apoptosis induced by EAE induction (EAE+ no-EX group) were restored and reduced, respectively, by aerobic training in the CNS of the EAE+EX group (P<0.001). Conclusion: The provision of a six-week treadmill aerobic training buffered the detrimental effects of EAE on BBB integrity and consequently neuronal apoptosis.

Objective. The present study sought to verify the effects of an exercise training on the memory along with the morphological assessment of the adrenal gland tissue in the rats with experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). Methods. Female Lewis rats were randomly divided into three groups: EAE group, EAE group with exercise (EAE+Ex), and control group (CO). Each group contained 10 rats. To evaluate the memory, all rats were subjected to the Morris water maze learning test for four consecutive days and one day for a prop test. EAE was induced by guinea pig spinal cord homogenate emulsified in incomplete Freund's adjuvant and heat-mycobacterium. The exercise training on a motorized treadmill was initiated 3 weeks before EAE induction and disconnected 2 weeks post-induction. Results. We found that exercise training for five weeks produced an improved swimming velocity related to memory improvement in EAE+Ex group in comparison with EAE group, but not an incurable adrenal gland tissue after EAE induction. Conclusions. The experimental design selected for this study appears to be an effective treatment for memory in rats with experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis.

OBJECTIVES: We have a weak understanding of how aerobic training may influence migraine, and the optimal parameters for exercise regimens as migraine therapy are not clear. The objectives of this study were to assess, first, effects of two different intensities of aerobic exercise on migraine headache indices; second, serum neuro-biomarker in women migraineurs. METHODS: A total of 45 non-athlete female migraine patients were selected by a neurologist and randomly divided into three groups: control (CON), moderate-intensity aerobic training (MOD T), and high-intensity aerobic training (HIGH T). Before and after the training protocol, body composition factors, migraine pain indices, VO2max, and serum Adenylate-Cyclase Activating Polypeptide (PACAP) and Substance P (SP) were measured. Exercise training protocol includes two different intensities of aerobic exercise: Moderate (13-15 Borg Scale, 60-80% HRmax) and High (15-17 Borg Scale, 65-95% HRmax). RESULTS: Moderate-intensity aerobic training (MOD T) reduced headache intensity, frequency, and duration in women with migraine (p < 0.001, for all). Also, high-intensity aerobic training (HIGH T) reduced headache intensity, frequency, and duration (p < 0.001, for all). However, for headache intensity and duration, MOD T was effective rather than HIGH T (p < 0.001; p ≤ 0.05, respectively). In addition, neither MOD T nor HIGH T could not alter PACAP and SP contents (p = 0.712; p = 0.249, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrated that either MOD T or HIGH T could modify migraine pain indices but neither MOD T nor HIGH T could not alter the PACAP and SP contents in women with migraine.

BACKGROUND: Different methods of warm-up may have implications in improving various aspects of soccer performance. The present study aimed to investigate acute effects of soccer specific warm-up protocols on functional performance tests. METHODS: This study using randomized within-subject design, investigated the performance of 22 collegiate elite soccer player following soccer specific warm-ups using dynamic stretching, static stretching, and FIFA 11+ program. Post warm-up examinations consisted: 1) Illinois Agility Test; 2) vertical jump; 3) 30 meter sprint; 4) consecutive turns; 5) flexibility of knee. RESULTS: Vertical jump performance was significantly lower following static stretching, as compared to dynamic stretching (P=0.005). Sprint performance declined significantly following static stretching as compared to FIFA 11+ (P=0.023). Agility time was significantly faster following dynamic stretching as compared to FIFA 11+ (P=0.001) and static stretching (P=0.001). Knee flexibility scores were significantly improved following the static stretching as compared to dynamic stretching (P=016). No significant difference was observed for consecutive turns between three warm-up protocol. CONCLUSIONS: The present finding showed that a soccer specific warm-up protocol relied on dynamic stretching is preferable in enhancing performance as compared to protocols relying on static stretches and FIFA 11+ program. Investigators suggest that while different soccer specific warm-up protocols have varied types of effects on performance, acute effects of dynamic stretching on performance in elite soccer players are assured, however application of static stretching in reducing muscle stiffness is demonstrated.

The aim of this study was to investigate effects of endurance and resistance training (ET and RT) on CGRP and AChRs at slow and fast twitch muscles and sciatic nerve in rats. Twenty-five male rats were randomly assigned into three groups including sedentary (SED), endurance training (ET), and resistance training (RT). Animals of ET exercised for 12 weeks, five times/week, and 60 min/day at 30 m/min. Animals of RT were housed in metal cage with 2 m high wire-mesh tower, with water bottles set at the top. 48 h after the last session of training protocol, animals were anaesthetized. The right sciatic nerves were removed; then, Soleus (SOL) and Tibialis anterior (TA) muscles were excised and immediately snap frozen in liquid nitrogen. All frozen tissues were stored at -80°C. Results showed that, after both ET and RT, CGRP content as well as AChR content of SOL and TA muscles significantly increased. But there was no significant difference among groups at sciatic nerve' CGRP content. In conclusion, data demonstrate that ET and RT lead to changes of CGRP and AChR content of ST and FT muscles. The changes indicate to the importance of neuromuscular activity.
